MSI Radeon HD 7870 TwinFrozr III OC review
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, May 18, 2012 - 8:58 PM N/A - 0 Comments

As its name implies the graphics card utilizes MSI’s proprietary TwinFrozr III cooling system that packs 8mm thick nickel-plated copper heatpipes to convey heat drawn directly from the GPU to a large aluminum fin array, ventilated by two 80 mm fans.

The driverset supports pretty much all modern GeForce graphics based graphics cards. So it is very unlikely that you'll need a modded .infWe have a discussion thread open on these drivers right here.

Intel DZ77RE-75K with ThunderBolt Pictured
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, May 18, 2012 - 8:45 PM N/A - 0 Comments

The DZ77RE-75K is near identical to the DZ77GA-70K, although we spotted at least one change beyond the Thunderbolt port. On top of that, it's also quite an expensive motherboard, more so than MSI's Z77A-GD80 as vrzone reports:

So the major difference between the DZ77RE-75K and it's more affordable sibling, the DZ77GA-70K is the inclusion of a mini DisplayPort connector which is also the standard interface for Thunderbolt and of course the Cactus Ridge Thunderbolt chip. Sadly Intel cheaped out on it first Thunderbolt motherboard and used the DSL3310 – or L3310L as it's referred to in the manual – which only offers the equivalent bandwidth of two PCI Express lanes. In other words, don't expect full Thunderbolt performance from this board, as it won't deliver it.

The second change is that due to the addition of the Thunderbolt interface, the bottom PCI Express x4 slot on the DZ77GA-70K is now a PCI Express x1 slot on the DZ77RE-75K. We should also point out that it's now being routed via the PLX PCI Express bridge, rather than being directly connected to the chipset, despite the fact that the Thunderbolt chip is only really using two PCI Express lanes. It's possible that this is due to at least in part the lack of a PCI Express x2 interface, but it's highly unlikely, as there's no reason as to why Intel would have to use all four lanes to connect the DSL3310 if it only requires two, so either the Thunderbolt chipset actually uses up four lanes for its physical board interface, or Intel has just taken the easy route out.

Price wise we found the DZ77RE-75K listed for CA$312 (S$399) in Canada and around €260 (S$420) in Europe, or some €15 more than MSI's Z77A-GD80. Admittedly we don't know what MSI will bundle with its board and Intel does offer a good bundle with a 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi/Bluetooth 2.1 module and it also sports more USB 3.0 ports, a pair of Gigabit Ethernet ports, FireWire and eSATA, but we'll wait and see which Thunderbolt chip MSI has used to make any comparisons between the two boards. We're also expecting Thunderbolt products from both Asus and Gigabyte at Computex in a couple of weeks' time and admittedly Intel is still cheaper than Asus with its P8Z77-V Premium which is currently listed at a wallet cringing €400 (S$650).

Today LaCie announced a new 2-bay network-attached storage solution (NAS) that delivers the ideal combination of speed and security for small businesses – the LaCie 2big NAS, design by Neil Poulton. Powered by a 2GHz processor and improved file system, the 2big NAS delivers speeds up to 100MB/s, ensuring employees can share files from any PC, Mac, or Linux workstation.

"According to data from Research and Markets, network storage is growing in excess of 30% annually, increasing the demands placed on network storage devices," said Erwan Girard, Professional Business Unit Manager at LaCie. "The LaCie 2big NAS was developed to scale with the needs of SOHO users, delivering fast file sharing and data security, the two most critical factors for a small business."

FAST COLLABORATION
In a data-dependant world, small offices can't afford delays in workflow. The 2big NAS supports non-stop data accessibility and collaboration thanks to its 2Ghz processor and LaCie NAS OS 2 software. It delivers enough storage capacity and bandwidth to back up multiple workstations, share large files and work on projects concurrently.

FORMIDABLE DATA SECURITY
Because data multiplies by the second, office administrators and IT professionals must ensure all digital assets are backed up and secure. The LaCie 2big NAS offers multiple levels of security including RAID 1 for data mirroring. Coupled with its hot-swappable drives, a failed disk can be replaced with no interruption, no data loss and without needing to turn off the device.

The LaCie 2big NAS ensures a complete backup of any Linux, PC or Mac workstation. Choose from the popular Time Machine and Windows 7 Backup software, or the included LaCie backup software. Consistent automatic backup means users can restore lost files instantly.

What's more, LaCie's NAS OS 2 dashboard makes it easy for businesses to back up the 2big NAS automatically, for added data security and peace of mind. Wizards with presets make advanced tasks such as RAID management, users management and NAS-to-NAS backups easy. No IT degree required. With just a few clicks users can back up the 2big NAS onto a direct-attached external hard drive, or schedule a nightly backup onto a NAS in a different location.

REMOTE ACCESSIBILITY
Complementary to fast file sharing and data security is instant access to your data. The 2big NAS allows employees to access important files anywhere where there is an Internet connection. They can even download the free iOS app – LaCie MyNAS – to access files from an iPhone or iPad.

ENERGY SAVINGS
The LaCie 2big NAS saves businesses money by allowing full control of its energy usage. Users can schedule shutdown and restart during optimal business hours to boost efficiency. Plus, the LaCie 2big NAS is now ten times more energy efficient when in deep sleep mode. And, thanks to the wake-on-LAN protocol, users can access the 2big NAS from deep sleep without being next to the system.

AVAILABILITY
The LaCie 2big NAS is available in 0TB and 6TB capacities through the LaCie Online Store, LaCie PROgram+ Partners and LaCie PROgram+ Resellers starting at $299.00. For more product information, visit www.lacie.com.

Blizzard Apologizes for Diablo III Issues
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, May 18, 2012 - 8:40 PM N/A - 0 Comments

Blizzard has issued an apology to the Diablo III community for the game's launch issues:

We'd like to extend a very sincere thank you to everyone who joined the global Diablo III launch celebrations this week, as well as to everyone who was ready to jump into Sanctuary the moment the game went live.

To that end, we'd also like to say that we've been humbled by your enthusiasm -- and we sincerely regret that your crusade to bring down the Lord of Terror was thwarted not by mobs of demons, but by mortal infrastructure. As many of you are aware, technical issues occurring within hours after the game's launch led to players experiencing error messages and difficulty logging in. These issues cropped up again last night for the Americas and Europe servers. Despite very aggressive projections, our preparations for the launch of the game did not go far enough.

We've been monitoring the game 24/7 and have applied several optimizations to help our systems better weather the global rush. As of late last night, specifically 11:50 PM PDT on May 15, all systems have been online and running relatively smoothly. We're continuing to monitor performance globally and will be taking further measures as needed to ensure a positive experience for everyone. This includes some maintenance to implement additional improvements for each region.

In order to make sure everything is continuing to run as it should, we've decided to move out our target launch for the real-money auction house beyond our original estimated date of May 22. We'll post further updates on that in the near future.

Aside from the tremendous number of players simultaneously logging in to the game, one of the launch-day service issues was linked to the achievement system. Some players began to notice early on that achievements were either not being earned properly, or not being saved between multiple logins. We're investigating this issue and will provide a specific update as soon as possible.

We greatly appreciate everyone's support, and we want to sincerely apologize for the difficulties many of you encountered on day one. Please visit the Battle.net Support site or Support forums for the latest service-related updates or for help in troubleshooting any technical issues you may be having downloading, installing, or while playing the game.

Thank you again for your patience while we reinforce the gates of Sanctuary and further strengthen it for your onslaught.

EVGA recalls a GeForce GTX 670 SC batch
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, May 18, 2012 - 8:39 PM N/A - 0 Comments

EVGA is pulling back some GTX 670 products. Here is exactly what EVGA had to say:

EVGA has isolated this problem to an early batch of GTX 670 Superclock cards (P/N: 02G-P3-2672-KR) that were not properly screened during QA/QC procedure. We have already been working with our partners to retest this particular batch. In the meantime, our R&D has also done numerous tests, burn in and component quality verification to confirm that the EVGA GTX 670 Superclock is a well designed product.

If any of your users are experiencing issues with their EVGA GTX 670 Superclock boards, please ask them to email Jacob Freeman, and he will assist in getting them setup with an RMA cross shipment along with EVGA upgrading them to the GTX 670 FTW version (P/N: 02G-P3-2685-KR) for the inconvenience of this.

"EVGA has not recalled its 670 product line," as Joe Darwin with EVGA put it, but EVGA has identified some bad product in the field which it is bringing back in from etailers. EVGA was not forthcoming with what exactly "this problem" with its products is or how it is identified
